I just oven-roasted chestnuts for the very first time, and your instructions were PERFECT!!
The details and the photos made it very easy to replicate, and all four dozen (in one batch) turned out GREAT – I am so thrilled!! THANK YOU!!!!

Just tried using this technique on some chestnuts I bought at my produce store here in Greece. It worked like a charm. 90% of the popped out whole and beautiful ready to go into my stew. A couple broke but overall easy peasy. Thanks for the informative post!

This was very helpful! I make a soup every holiday season that requires chestnuts, and peeling them has always been a dreaded step in the process. Scoring, soaking, and steaming made peeling them a snap! No sliced or burnt fingers from other methods I have tried in the past. Thanks for posting!

Honestly, I did not know about testing the freshness that way. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.

If they float it means they are rotten and have to be discarded. I bought a half pound at Thanksgiving, kept in fridge until 3 wks later, had to throw them out as every chestnut floated.

Hello Alex,
This makes me so happy as I had to test this recipe many times. Like you said, it can be time consuming to peel them but I guess that is part of the fun.
Thanks for coming by and taking the time to leave a review.
Cheers!

Dear Aysegul, thanks for another fabulous recipe. I live in Croatia where in winter we have a lot of vendors selling roasted chestnuts, but awfully expensive. I have tried a few methods before yours and always had big issues with peeling the chestnuts. Yours is foolproof, if a bit time consuming, but with a bit of forward planning, it’s no biggie. Thanks again!
